A chain is a staple in any jewelry wardrobe – and making one is not only fun, but also a great way to introduce important techniques in jewelry making such as sawing, soldering, using a rolling mill and drawing wire, forming and finishing. This course will introduce you to the art of chain-making, beginning with a classical loop-in-loop chain created by fusing and then weaving fine silver loops. From there, you can venture into more complicated woven chains, incorporating handmade clasps and terminations, stones or beads. Or, you can learn modern chain-making styles such as curb and omega chains, or even chain mail. The possibilities are endless! Soldering skills suggested, but not required.

Do you crave color? Epoxy resin, a simple two-part adhesive, is a wonderful base for creating dynamic effects with color pigments, embedded objects and painting techniques. Sometimes known as “cold enamel,” using epoxy resin is easy and fun, and requires only a small space, a little specialized equipment and no heat. This course will introduce you to a variety of applications of epoxy resin, from creating a traditional cloisonn enameled look without a kiln to using artists’ pigments and painting, to more avant-garde techniques involving collage, found objects and layered montage. Soldering skills suggested, but not required.
